A feature about the Smeura, the world's largest animal shelter

I’ve been an advocate for animal rights since childhood – a belief that continues to shape my work today. This connection inspired me to write the feature „Unerwünscht und im Visier der Tierfänger Rumäniens – heimatlose Seelen“ (translated: "Unwanted and Targeted by Romania’s Animal Catchers – Homeless Souls"), a piece that sheds light on the tireless efforts of Tierhilfe Hoffnung e.V., the organization behind Smeura, the world’s largest animal shelter.

Blending reportage and documentary storytelling, the piece immerses readers in the harsh reality of Romania’s street animals – souls fighting for survival in a system that often treats them with cruelty. Hunted by state-funded catchers and sent to overcrowded killing stations, their fate seems sealed – until animal welfare organizations like Tierhilfe Hoffnung step in to offer a second chance.

For this feature, I interviewed Matthias Schmidt, the shelter’s director. His accounts of dramatic rescues and the relentless work of his team give the story emotional depth and urgency. It’s not just a report on suffering – it’s a story of resilience, hope, and unwavering commitment. Through personal encounters and raw honesty, the text brings to life the compassion and courage behind one of Europe’s most important animal welfare missions.
